Childbirth is extremely unpredictable, in fact, 80% of childbirths have some form of complication. All of these potential complications mean that doctors must make sudden split-second decisions to react to problems during childbirth.
Unfortunately, too often a doctor or nurse may make the wrong decision under pressure and that error could cause Cerebral Palsy.
1) Doctors must make sure that the baby always has oxygen during the birth process. A doctor must make sure that the baby’s breathing is not impeded by being stuck in the birth canal or being caught by the umbilical cord.
2) Babies often move during the final birthing process. A child may move into an improper position during childbirth. In such situations, a doctor must act immediately and sometimes orders a C-section.
3) The doctor must be sure to deliver the infant within 24 hours after the membranes have broken. Doctors must act immediately once problems appear during birth. If the mother has problems such as bleeding an unusually long labor process, or unusually high blood pressure, the doctor must act to address these problems. When these problems occur, the doctor must often act decisively, whether it be getting a specialist in birthing complications, ordering a c-section or using drugs appropriately. If the doctor fails to make the right decision at the correct time, his error could cause Cerebral Palsy. There are many factors that suggest the injury occurred as a result of improper medical care or injury to the brain during the birthing process. If the baby shows signs after birth of not breathing properly, it suggests an error may have occurred. It is critical that a baby begin breathing immediately after birth (that is why doctors slap the baby immediately after birth). If the baby’s skin is blue or dusky or if the baby is floppy after birth it may indicate problems.
If you believe a doctor’s error may have caused your child’s Cerebral Palsy, you should consider joining the thousands of other victims of medical negligence and consider seeking qualified legal help.
