The Connecticut Department of Insurance has very strict requirements regarding coverage for motor vehicles. These apply to private passenger vehicles, motorcycles and commercial vehicles, alike. The required coverage includes:
Liability Coverage. Liability insurance pays for damages to others if you are determined to be at fault in a motor vehicle accident. If you are found negligent, liability insurance pays only to settle claims or pay judgments against you. Higher liability limits are available and can provide better coverage. Check with your insurance company to learn about additional options.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage. Commonly referred to as UM coverage, it allows your insurance company to compensate you for property damage or bodily injury if the driver who was at fault has limited or no liability insurance.
Medical Payments Coverage. Medical payments coverage pays for the medical needs of the driver and any passengers who are in the insured vehicle.
There are a couple of optional coverages that are also recommended to provide better protection to the insured vehicle and its occupants.
Collision Coverage. Collision coverage pays for repairs to or replacement of your vehicle following an accident, regardless of who is at fault. There is usually a deductible on the amount paid. (Note: Most finance companies require this coverage while the vehicle is financed.)
Comprehensive Coverage. This coverage pays for damage to your car other than that caused by collision including a trucking accident. It includes theft, vandalism, impact with animals or birds, explosion, flood, falling objects, windstorm and glass breakage. Just like collision coverage, there is usually a deductible.
These are just a few of the types of insurance coverage available. We recommend that you contact your insurance provider and review your policy in depth. Carrying too little or the wrong type of vehicle coverage can result in a large financial burden if you are at fault in a serious motor vehicle accident.
