We at the law firm of Trantolo & Trantolo, LLC would like to keep you informed of the dangers presented by the growing number of personal watercrafts on our nation’s waterways. Here are some recent personal watercraft accidents that have made the news.
August 8, 2007. An 18-year-old boy was killed in an accident involving two personal watercrafts. Witnesses said two teens were playing on personal watercraft in the Maple Point area for much of the day. One teen tried to splash the other with water, and their watercraft collided. One watercraft ran over the other, sending one boy into the water.
The injured teen was taken to a dock at Eaton Ferry Bridge, where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He suffered blunt trauma to the neck area. The second teen was treated for minor injuries and released from a nearby hospital. The second teen will face misdemeanor charges for negligent operation of a watercraft. By law, personal watercraft must run at idle speed within 100 feet of another vessel, and watercraft operators must not approach another vessel and swerve at the last moment.
June 3, 2007. The body of a Caledonia County man has been found following a personal watercraft accident. It happened at the Moore Dam Reservoir on the Connecticut River. Police say the 23 year-old victim of Waterford and a friend were jet-skiing when their machine malfunctioned. The victim tried to swim to shore. His friend stayed with the personal watercraft, where he could hear his friend yelling but was unable to help. Searchers did not find the 23 year-old victim until the next day. Divers recovered his body in about 15 feet of water. He was not wearing a life jacket.
May 29, 2007. The body of New England Patriots defensive end Marquise Hill was found a day after he was reported missing following a personal watercraft accident on Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans, Louisiana. Hill's body was discovered by searchers about a quarter of a mile from where the 24-year-old and a female companion were involved in the accident. Hill's body was taken to the Orleans Parish Coroner's office. Hill and a young woman were on a personal watercraft Sunday in the lake when both of them went into the water, which had a strong current. Authorities said the woman was able to make it to a pylon and hang on until she was rescued, while Hill was last seen floating away from the scene.
