Electronic throttle suspected in Toyota Camry acceleration problems
February 22nd, 2010
As Congressional hearings regarding Toyota’s recent proliferation of serious safety problems continue, many officials questions whether the largest car company in the world has fully diagnosed the problems. Three fatal car crashesattributed to acceleration defects occurred in 2005 Toyota Camry’s. In each case, evidence points to prolonged acceleration during which time drivers tried in vain to slow their vehicles.
The eyewitness testimonies as well as 150 feet of skid marks indicating application of the emergency brake in one crash contradict the defense claim that the accidents were due to “pedal confusion,” meaning drivers pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake.
Rapid acceleration problems have been attributed to sticky gas pedals and floor mat interference in several models. However, the 2005 Camry is not included in the recalls for those issues. Many experts suspect Toyota’s electronic throttle system as the cause.
In response to these suspicions, Toyota has said that it has studies the systems and found no defects. In December, Toyota hired independent firm Exponent to investigate the electronic throttles. Its initial report has been submitted to Congress.
Because Toyota hasn’t acknowledged any sudden acceleration defects in the 2005 or 2006 Camrys, what caused the acceleration may remain a mystery. Lawyers for families are convinced, however, that electronic throttle defects are responsible.
