Burn injuries can be extremely painful and traumatizing to the body, and very upsetting if they were caused by a defective product or by the negligence of another person. The American Burn Association estimates that in the United States, over one million burns occur each year that require medical attention.
Burn injuries are usually caused by:
- Car accidents
- Gasoline or other flammable liquid explosions
- Spilling hot or scalding liquids
- Electrical accidents
- Industrial accidents
- House fires
- Fireworks mishaps
Degrees of burn injury Burn injuries are classified according to their degree of severity. Most are first, second, or third degree burns, although they can be as severe as a sixth degree injury.
First degree – The skin is red at the burn site and the victim may feel some minor pain. Second degree – The burn fills with clear fluid and involves some blistering. The victim may feel some pain depending on the level of nerve involvement. . Third degree – The skin is charred, producing leather-like scabs. There is less pain because the nerves in the burn site have been destroyed. Fourth degree – The muscles and bones are at least partly burned and the skin cannot be repaired. Fifth degree –The muscles are destroyed. Sixth degree –All soft tissue in the area is destroyed and the bones are charred.
Tragically, if a burn of any degree covers a large portion of the body, death can result.
The first 48 hours after the injury are the most critical for survival and recovery. Two of the biggest potential problems are infection and fluid loss. To fight these risks, doctors use electrolytes, fluids, antibiotics, and a tetanus vaccination during the initial treatment. When the patient has been stabilized, the wounds are cleaned and covered. Severe burns may require a skin graft if there is not enough healthy skin to cover the wound.
