Giving birth to a healthy baby is something millions of people dream of.  Unfortunately, many babies are permanently injured during the childbirth process as a result of medical malpractice.  If your child has been injured during birth, you may be able to file a birth injury medical malpractice claim.

Although there are many different factors that can contribute to the occurrence of a birth injury, in every situation, a doctor can take measures to lessen the chances of a birth injury occurring.  For instance, the doctor should properly diagnose the situation and determine if there are any precautions or measures that can be made to prevent birth injury.

Some of the most common forms of birth injury include:

  1. Cerebral PalsyCerebral Palsy can be caused by a number of different factors.  In birth injuries, it is most often caused by a lack of oxygen supplied to the brain.  Cerebral Palsy cannot be cured, and it can have serious, lifelong disabilities including poor motor skills, vision loss, seizures, and learning disabilities.

  2. Erb’s Palsy – Erb’s Palsy is caused by trauma inflicted upon the brachial plexus nerve.  The brachial plexus nerve aids the movement and control of the arm and shoulder.  Erb’s Palsy occurs when this nerve is damaged or torn during the childbirth.  While some Erb’s Palsy can be corrected, more serious forms are permanent.

  3. Brain Damage – Brain damage can occur as a birth injury from a variety of different factors.  Brain damage can be caused by undiagnosed infections, reactions to medications, and lack of oxygen supplied to the baby.

No child should be forced to cope with lifelong medical problems.  Birth injuries can be very serious.  Other birth injuries that can occur as a result of medical malpractice include:

  1. Spinal Cord Damage
  2. Broken Bones
  3. Intracranial Hemorrhaging
  4. Jaundice
  5. Meningitis
